Bullet September 10-12, 2008
 

The Governor’s P-20 Council participates in Achieve, Inc.’s College & Career Ready Policy Institute that will help put K-12 assessment and accountability systems in place to ensure that all students graduate from high school college and career ready.  The Institute is being sponsored by Achieve, Inc., the Data Quality Campaign, the EducationCounsel, Jobs for the Future, and the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices.

Bullet July 31, 2008
  Arizona is recognized as one of sixteen states taking the lead on developing rigorous, common core standards by Achieve, Inc.  Click here to read more.
Bullet May – June 2008
  The Governor’s P-20 Council and the Arizona Department of Education implement an Algebra II End of Course Test with 1,300 Arizona high school students.  The test was developed through a 14 state consortium through Achieve, Inc.’s American Diploma Project Network.
Bullet June 19, 2008:

 

The Governor’s P-20 Council adopted 35 recommendations from its Higher Education Ad Hoc Committee, with the purpose of increasing the number of postsecondary degrees in the state.

The Governor’s P-20 Council is featured in Education Week’s “Diplomas Count 2008: School to College, Can State P-16 Councils Ease the Transition.

Bullet May 30, 2008:
  The Governor’s Office, Education Commission of the States and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation host the Arizona Governor's Forum: Linking Ready Kids to Ready Schools that created recommendations to integrate early childhood goals into the work of the Governor’s P-20 Council and align early childhood with the early elementary years through third grade (known as P-3). 
Bullet May 30, 2008:
  The Governor’s Office is awarded a $25,000 grant from America’s Promise Alliance to hold a Statewide Dropout Prevention Leadership Summit.
Bullet April 8, 2008:
  The Governor’s P-20 Council is selected to participate in the Lumina Foundation for Education’s Making Opportunities Affordable Grant Program that will focus on the implementation of the Council’s higher education work.
Bullet March 27, 2008:
  The State of Arizona is selected to participate in the National Governors Association Professional Science Master’s Policy Academy.
Bullet February 25, 2008:
  The Arizona State Board of Education requires an Education Career Action Plan (ECAP) for all students, beginning with the freshmen class of 2009.  The P-20 Council recommended this in December 2006 to ensure that students will have a clear pathway to high school graduation. 
Bullet February 22, 2008:
  P-20 Council Member, Dr. Sybil Francis, featured in the Arizona Capitol Times’ special section on “Women in Government”.
Bullet February 20, 2008:
  Arizona was one of two states featured for its progress in aligning education system at Achieve, Inc.’s launch of its 50 state education report, “Closing the Expectations Gap 2008.” (http://www.achieve.org/node/990)
Bullet February 2008:
  The P-20 Council provides Arizona fourth, fifth and sixth grade teachers a poster containing strategies to enhance adolescent literacy, as a part of a statewide literacy initiative.
Bullet February 2008:
  In partnership with the Arizona K-12 Center, the P-20 Council is providing scholarships to Arizona teachers to receive their Reading Endorsement.  Applications are being accepted until May 2008. Contact the Arizona K-12 Center for more information at: 602.443.6444.
Bullet December 10, 2007:
  Arizona State Board of Education raises high school graduation requirements. The P-20 Council recommended this action in December 2006 in order to increase student preparedness for postsecondary education and training.  The increased graduation requirements include:
  • Raising the math requirement from 2 credits to 4 credits
  • Raising the science requirement from 2 credits to 3 credits
  • Adding ½ credit in economic
