Steering Committee |
| |
Purpose:
The committee is charged to make recommendations to the P-20 Council regarding priorities and strategies that will support the Council achieving its stated purpose to improve education in Arizona. The Committee may perform additional functions as assigned by the Council. Membership of the Steering Committee will be comprised of the Council’s co-chair and all committee chairs. |

| Education & Workforce Pathways Committee |
| |
Purpose:
To create/expand pathways that promote high school graduation and postsecondary education, training or certification in light of the increased high school graduation requirements. |
| |
Initiatives: |
| |
- Create multiple pathways for students to meet high school graduation requirements.
- Expand early college options.
- Enhance the academic content within CTE programs of study.

| Communications Committee |
| |
Purpose: To create and execute a communications plan to sustain public will for P-20 reform. |
| |
Initiatives: |
| |
- Conduct a public awareness campaign in partnership with education, foundation and business leaders.
|
| Data & Graduation Committee |
| |
Purpose:
To build a robust assessment system and expand data capacity to enable data-driven decision making for improving high school graduation rates and alignment of the P-20 education pipeline; and linking data systems across the entire education pipeline from pre-school through postsecondary education. |

Initiatives: |

- Raise the compulsory attendance age.
- Implement an effective data system.
- Implement a teacher identifier.

| Teachers Committee |
| |
Purpose:
Building on the work of the Governor’s Committee on Teacher Quality and Support, the Teachers Committee is working to attract, prepare and retain high quality teachers in Arizona, focused on improving and enhancing teacher pre-services training, professional development, teacher compensation and benefits. |

Initiatives: |

- Improve teacher quality.
- Increase the attraction, retention and supply of STEM teachers.
- Arizona STEM Center.

| Education Alignment & Assessment Committee |
| |
Purpose:
To systematically address educational alignment in programs and policies from preschool, K-12 and postsecondary education, into life-long learning opportunities. |

Initiatives: |
| |
- Review assessments, including AIMS and end of course tests.
- More students taking and passing Algebra I in the 8th grade.
- Adoption of the more rigorous math standard.
- Revision of Arizona’s English Language Arts standard.

| Literacy Committee |
| |
Purpose:
To implement the NGA grant for adolescent literacy by developing a state literacy plan; build school and district capacity to identify and assess struggling readers’ specific needs; implement program to increase the number of teachers with reading endorsements; and build public awareness of the literacy crisis. |

Initiatives: |
| |
- Support teachers by providing strategies to support literacy instruction.
- Conducted three adolescent literacy forums in 2007.

| Early Education Ad Hoc Committee |
| |
Purpose:
To make recommendations to the Council regarding priorities and strategies to fully align the education system from early childhood through higher education. The Committee will also provide leadership in convening a day-long meeting on aligning early childhood with the early elementary years (through third grade) and work to refine the recommendations that will come out of that meeting. |

Initiatives: |

- Assist in planning and participate in a daylong meeting on aligning early childhood with the early elementary years.
- Identify recommendations regarding priorities and strategies around early childhood and elementary alignment (P-3)
to be incorporated into the work of the Council’s standing committees.
- Identify recommendations regarding priorities and strategies on aligning early childhood development into the entire P-20 education continuum, to be incorporated into the work of the Council’s standing committees.

| Higher Education Ad Hoc Committee |

Purpose:
To increase the number of postsecondary degrees in Arizona. |
| |
Initiatives: |
| |
- Implement Centennial Scholars program.
- Increase bachelor’s degree production.
- Facilitate more students going to and graduating from a community college/university
- Expand collaborative programs (such as 2+2, 3+1, and 2+2+2 agreements).
- Develop strategies to provide expanded degree programs at community colleges in limited subject areas.
- Explore the creation of "university centers" on community college campuses.
- Enhance the transfer of credits between institutions that count toward a degree.
- Streamline governance of higher education.
