Moving Forward Through Smart Growth
Governor Napolitano believes that as Arizona continues to flourish, we can meet the needs of our growing state and ensure an exceptional quality of life by coordinating transportation planning, water management, school districts to keep up with the rapid pace of our growth, and by coordinating with both the public and private sector in these efforts.
To move Arizona forward through smart growth, Governor Napolitano has:
- Led efforts to add more than 500 lane miles of freeway throughout Arizona.
- Worked with local, county and regional transportation planning groups to develop a statewide transportation plan that includes and incorporates roadway, rail, pedestrian and bicycle facilities.
- Extended bond terms from 20 to 30 years to provide $500 million to accelerate statewide transportation planning.
- Created Arizona’s first-ever comprehensive drought plan and statewide conservation strategy.
- Led efforts to reach a historic agreement that limits the amount of water California can siphon from the Colorado River.
- Worked with local, county and Tribal communities to implement their Growing Smarter plans and make smart growth land use and development decisions by connecting more than $500 million in state discretionary funding to these outcomes.
